Unemployability is a problem that even the much-admired late former
President of India, A.P.J. Abdul Kalam, was concerned about. This was evidenced
in his convocation address of Bangalore University, where he said that,
"It is not unemployment which is a major problem; it is the question of
'unemployability' which is a bigger crisis".
In India, It is very disappointing to know that
70% of our graduates lack the basic employable skills. Several lakhs of
students graduate every year in India but only a few of them are fit for
employment. This is sad, but reality.
We have been observing a consistent skills gap
between students and industry. Employers want graduates who can deliver from day one; they are
not willing to train candidates. Students passing out of colleges are not
amenable to ground realities, they are all waiting to sit on the rocket to the
moon. Sadly, there is no rocket
In the last semester of the studies when
students have to go for the industrial internship, there is lack of guidance
for the students who have no experience to take right decision.
In campus life, from lectures to seminars,
practical work to assignments, students never focus on the studies and
acquiring skills. Often students are heard saying they will start studying
later and this later becomes a final late. Most of the students feel that only
academic studies are sufficient for them to get a job but their belief gets
disillusioned when face the market reality.
As the first step towards addressing this issue, we set out to
identify traits / skills which are required in order to achieve success.
At “STREBEN” we equip the students with those ‘Employability Skills’ and provide them appropriate industry-specific training so that they
can carry out their role to the best of their ability.
